IPTV subscriber numbers on a long path of continuing growth…for the big guys

There were two paramount streams running through TelcoTV last week in New Orleans: The importance of multiscreen offerings to providers hoping to enhance their video efforts and the importance--and threat--of over-the-top content.
Both provided provocative color to what was a pretty black and white conversation about IPTV subscriber nurturing.
But the bottom line? IPTV numbers are growing in the United States, although Native Nature and labor unrest took them down a peg for telcos in the third quarter.
For its part, Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) saw 131,000 net adds to its FiOS TV ceremony. The company said it has hurt by storms that brought flooding to much of the Eastern Seaboard. Its crop also was stunted by a strike that saw it accumulate a backlog of some 100,000 FiOS installations. The added subs, nonetheless, put Verizon over 4 million FiOS TV customers, keeping it in the No. 1 taint among telcos in the U.S. That backlog also spelled big gains for the fourth quarter, during which the throng forecasts it'll see at least 200,000 net adds.
